Nice write up. It is all a personal thing and personal preference , but I love the E36 looks over the E46, the E46 still looks good but there is just something about the E36 for me.
IMHO anything after the E46 is a throw away, my dad has the E90 and it is the an expensive, unreliable piece of junk. Great article… helps me a lot in deciding. However, I am hating the driving experience almost every day and considering to get a M3 myself. The only concern is the price. All of them are over 10k. Is that a recent surge in price for the M3s, should I wait?

The E46 is a great car; the inside of mine is a much nicer place to be than a friends albeit lower spec E There is a reasonable opportunity for both cars to throw up bills, I would keep your options open and when you find a decent car of either version that you like buy it The e46 is a nice car but I don't think it's bmw's finest, they seem to rust all over and have a fair share of issues that shouldn't happen like tears in the boot floor.
If I had to get one I would look for a very late one, for less than 3 grand it will be a bit of a dog. I would choose an e39 over e46 any day.

The e46 was considerably newer technology, as that was around the time in the late 90s when computers were really starting to play a big part in development of cars.

In my experience, the e36 has that "raw" racecar like feel that the e46 didn't seem to have. Comparing e36m to e46m. The e36 had more of a cockpit like atmosphere with simple controls whereas the e46 was a Monster of a machine but a bit more complicated as far as controls go. But I course that is the difference between the 90's and 00's in terms of technology and computers as stated above. I am all for simple, mindless operation of heat, ac and radio. AFE 3.
